New to basketball?
What the words mean, and when each season happens.
The kinds of basketball
- Rec program or house league: sign up, get placed on a team, play for fun. No tryout. A good first step.
- Training or academy: skills sessions in small groups for dribbling, shooting and footwork.
- Club team: a tryout team that practises through a season and travels to tournaments. You'll also hear it called rep, short for representative, or a travel team.
- School team: each high school has junior and senior teams, and many have grade 8 teams. Tryouts are at school in early November.
- Drop-in or open run: show up and play. Check the age range and whether you need to register first.
- Camp: a few days of training, usually in summer or over spring break.
- 3x3: three-on-three basketball on a half court. Fast games, small teams.
Ages, grades and team names
Clubs often name teams by age. U13 means under 13 years old. Schools use grades instead: junior teams are usually grades 9 and 10, and senior teams grades 11 and 12. This site groups everything by grade: K to 3, 4 to 6, 7 to 9 and 10 to 12.
Where players can go next
After high school, players move on to college basketball (PACWEST is the BC college league) or university basketball (Canada West, part of U SPORTS).

What we collect
If you sign up, we keep your email address, the area you picked, your kids' grades (and boys' or girls' teams, if you picked one), the date you signed up and the wording you agreed to. We never ask for names. If you send a listing, we keep the club name, email and link you send. We also count how many times each listing's links get tapped. We don't record who tapped them.
Why
To email you when tryouts, registration or camps open for your kids' grades, to send the monthly update, to review listings, and to show clubs how many families we send their way. We also count signups by area and grade, never by name, to see where families need more basketball.
